The Rousdon Village Bakery

The Rousdon Village Bakery is situated in the heart of Devonshire countryside on the main road running through the village of Rousdon, not far from the seaside town of Lyme Regis.

Henry had been here before me and had kept the individual quirks of this fabulous foodie destination a secret- from the retro disused petrol pumps adorning the outdoor seating area, to the trendy industrial vibe, the utterly different menu and the quirky ordering and serving system, so I was really excited to come here for brunch for the first time!

It did not disappoint! Rousedon Village Bakery is a characterful, quirky, hipster joint that would not be out of place in Peckham and its situation beside a small Devonshire village, makes it’s overall concept all the more extraordinary. Even the system for ordering your food and drink is unusual- you head to the coffee machine or kitchen area to let the cheerful staff know what you want and your order is called out as and when it is ready. It is all very chilled. The bakery provides a unique destination for a quirky original menu and an unusually good flat white.

The food is served on chunky timber- be careful of that oozing maple syrup as you make your way back to your table! And the coffee and drinks are enjoyed from gorgeous especially made “The Rousdon Bakery”stamped crockery made locally by Ali Herbert Ceramics based in Lyme Regis, so that the whole place has a beautifully rustic, quirky yet divinely local feel that we love at Seasonal 365. There are little pots of homemade peanut butter next to your usual sugar for your coffee. It is simply charming.

Just to establish, the menu is not aimed at those watching their waist line. It does incorporate locally sourced ingredients, but think buttery pastry, sourdough and brioche rather wholemeal country bread and that almighty American-style pairing of sweet and savoury maple sugar and bacon and then picture that all covered in a dusting of icing sugar for good measure!! The flavours are sweet and robust and it is a very hearty brunch to set you up for the weekend. I had the “cowboy stack”- three slices of generously buttered brioche eggy bread with homemade smokey baked beans topped with bacon. Sinfully delicious.

The coffee was wonderful and the brunch was the perfect Saturday morning post-park run treat!! We highly recommend it if you want something unique and different on your Devon weekend rambles. E&H
